Terms of Use

For the Fotufilm app (com.muastudio.fotufilm) and for this website, published by MUAStudio Inc. of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada.
Effective 24 August 2026 · Last updated 5 September 2026

The app is licensed to you, not sold. The photographs and video you develop with it are yours — before and after, with no rights claimed over any of it. The engine code and film profiles have separate licences.

The short version

The rest of this page is the same thing said carefully. Where the two differ, the careful version governs.

Which licence covers your copy

Fotufilm reaches you one of two ways, and each carries its own end-user licence for the software itself.

This page sits alongside whichever of those applies to your copy. It governs your use of this website, and it states the positions — on your images, on the film packs, on trademarks — that hold across every build. Where a store's licence and this page conflict about the software, the store's licence wins for that copy.

What you may do

Restrictions for store builds and film profiles

The restrictions below do not limit rights granted by Apache-2.0 or the Starter profiles’ CC BY-ND 4.0 licence. Those separate licences control the files they cover.

The first two are the ones that matter to us. The calibrated film packs are the part of Fotufilm that took the longest to make.

Your photographs and video

They stay yours. Fotufilm claims no rights in anything you open, develop or save, and it acquires no licence to your work — which follows from how it is built as much as from what we promise: image processing is local and nothing you develop is sent to the licensing service. The privacy policy covers that in full.

The other side of it is yours too: you are responsible for having the right to the images you put through the app, and for what you do with the results.

Film packs

The app reads film stocks as packs rather than compiled-in constants, and two quite different kinds of pack end up in the same list.

Packs you author

A pack you fit yourself is your work and your property. Nothing here claims any interest in it, and nothing restricts what you do with numbers you derived — keep them, share them, sell them.

Packs that ship with the app

The calibrated packs bundled with Fotufilm are ours, and your licence is to use them inside the app. They are not licensed as data: extracting the packs, or the calibration in them, is not permitted unless a separate pack licence allows it.

Starter pack

The released Gold 200, Tri-X 400, and Provia 100F Starter profiles use CC BY-ND 4.0. Their Starter notice and licence govern those files. Application restrictions and termination do not limit rights granted by that separate licence. Using these profiles does not require attribution on rendered photographs or videos. The Mac app and plugins need no activation.

Included film catalogue

You may use the film profiles for personal and commercial photo and video work under the stock licence.

Trademarks and film stock names

"Fotufilm" and "MUA Studio" are marks of MUAStudio Inc. They, their logos and the branding on this site identify official builds, and nothing here grants a licence to use them.

Film stock and manufacturer names in the app and on this site are trademarks of their respective owners, used to identify the material a simulation models and for no other reason. Fotufilm is not affiliated with, sponsored by or endorsed by any film manufacturer. No manufacturer logos or trade dress are used, and no manufacturer's own publications are redistributed.

Apple, the Apple logo and App Store are trademarks of Apple Inc., registered in the U.S. and other countries and regions.

Third-party components

The app builds on third-party image-processing and numerical libraries under their own permissive licences. They are listed with those licences in the third-party notices and in the app's acknowledgements screen. Nothing on this page changes their terms.

This website

fotufilm.com runs no analytics. The account and license portal uses the browser storage required for account access — see the privacy policy for details.

Its text, images and sample renders are Copyright © 2026 MUAStudio Inc., and are published for reading, linking and quoting with attribution. Republishing the pages wholesale, or reusing the sample images as your own work, is not covered. Link to us freely; the pages are meant to be linked to.

Apple's part in this

For a build installed from the App Store, these terms are between you and MUAStudio Inc. Apple is not a party to them, is not responsible for the app, and has no obligation to provide support for it — support@fotufilm.com is where support comes from.

Changes

The app changes as it is developed: features are added, and occasionally one is reworked or retired. If we change these terms we will move the date at the top of this page, so that date always tells you which version you are reading. Continuing to use Fotufilm after a change means you accept the revised terms; if you do not, stop using the app.

Warranty

Fotufilm is provided "as is", without warranty of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose and non-infringement. It models photographic film as accurately as we can make it, and we say a good deal on this site about how accurately that is — but none of that is a warranty that any particular result will match any particular real film, or that the app will run without fault on every device.

Liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, MUAStudio Inc. is not liable for any claim or damages arising from the app or its use, including lost work or lost images. Keep your originals: the app develops a copy and leaves the source alone, which is the habit that makes this clause academic.

Some jurisdictions do not allow these exclusions, and where they don't, they apply to the fullest extent they can. Nothing here limits liability that cannot lawfully be limited, and none of it affects consumer rights you have under the law of the place you live.

Termination

Your licence ends automatically if you breach it. On termination, stop using the app and delete it. The terms that by their nature survive — the film pack restrictions, the trademark position, the warranty disclaimer, the liability limits and the governing law — survive.

Governing law

MUAStudio Inc. is incorporated in Canada and operates from Waterloo, Ontario. These terms are governed by the laws of the Province of Ontario and the federal laws of Canada that apply there, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules, and a dispute about them is heard in the courts of Ontario sitting in the Regional Municipality of Waterloo.

That is where we are, not a way of putting a dispute out of your reach. Nothing in this section takes away a mandatory consumer protection right, or the right to bring a claim in the courts of the place you live, where the law of that place gives you one. For a build installed from the App Store, the store's own licence governs the software and says where its disputes are heard; this section covers these terms and this website.

The United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods does not apply. The parties have asked that these terms be drawn up in English — les parties ont demandé que ce texte soit rédigé en anglais.
